IS YOUR HOME DIWALI READY? TIPS FOR QUICK AND EASY CLEANING OF YOUR HOME!

Diwali is just two weeks away and usually it is the time when friends & family come over to take part in the festivities! Many of us buy new furniture, clean and redecorate our home interiors during this time. While the festivities this year are expected to be low key, it does not mean that you cannot spruce up your home. It is considered auspicious to clean the house as it signifies getting rid of the negativity and making way for the new positive times to come. So, if you haven’t already started cleaning your house, it is time to get started!

CREATE A SCHEDULE

Start by mentally picturing things you want to change or do away with around the house. Then make a list of these, going through each section of the house. Based on the work involved, allocate the time required for cleaning that particular section. Then see how many rooms you can fit-in in a day with your other schedule. Finish one room and only then move to the next. Don’t try to finish all your cleaning in one day. You will end up getting exhausted and may abandon the project altogether.

CHECK YOUR STOCK OF CLEANING EQUIPMENT

If you do not use a vacuum cleaner regularly, it is time to pull out yours and check if it is working fine and has enough garbage bags. You dont want to run into problems in the midst of cleaning.

Similarly stock up on floor cleaners, bathroom cleaners, specific brushes, wipes masks and gloves. Oh, don’t forget to check if you have vinegar and baking soda (Yes! You can use these for cleaning too!!)

If you don’t have a ladder, it is time to invest in one. Many of the ecommerce sites have fabulous sales going on where you can get great deals. Or just borrow one from a neighbour.

GET STARTED!

While we all love a neat home, most of us don’t like the cleaning part. But if you want to be ready for Diwali, it is time to get started. NOW.

Before you begin, cover surfaces that you don’t want the dirt to fall. Even the cleanest of homes will have little corners where dust and cobwebs accumulate and you don’t want them on your furniture as you clean.

Start at the top – get a ceiling broom and dust away the cobwebs. You could use a vacuum to suck out the dust from light fixtures or use a microfiber cloth. Don’t forget to brush down the walls as well.

One pro-tip that many swear by is using old pillow cases to clean the blades of the fan. Just cover the blade of the fan with a pillow case and wipe as you pull it out. This will give you a clean blade from all sides while also ensuring that the dust doesn’t fall down.

For cleaning glass surfaces, use equal parts of vinegar with water and fill up a spray bottle. Just spray and wipe to get your glass sparkling. Don’t use these on TV Screens, Phone or Laptops. Invest in special solutions for cleaning them to ensure that you don’t damage when cleaning.

You could add some lemon juice to the same spray bottle solution to get rid of hard water stains on taps, kitchen countertops and tiles. Or use a mixture of baking soda and regular dish soap to scrub away dirt easily with minimal pressure.

To clean fabric surfaces like beds, sofas etc., spray on some vinegar and sprinkle a little baking soda. Wait a few minutes and vacuum for a clean surface. Always remember to do a little patch test on a place that is not visible to the eye and then adjust the consistency of the mix.

For cleaning electrical appliances, use only dry cloth so that you don’t damage them. It would be a good idea to use microfiber wipes for them.

Wash and change your set of curtains and cushion covers. These are frequently neglected and not changed as often as bedsheets and pillow cases.

CALL IN THE PROFESSIONALS

While all this may seem easy, some of us genuienly hate cleaning. Or we simply may not have time with the Work From Home scenario. Don’t worry – call professional cleaning service, who can get your home sparking in no time. Many offer discounts during this season. Ensure they wear a mask, gloves and use sanitizer liberally and be safe.

DECLUTTER & GIVE AWAY

As you go about cleaning and putting things in their place, you will find may things that you do not use. Keep aside two big cartons – one for items in good condition that can be of use to someone and another for broken or expired items that has to be thrown.

If you haven’t used any item in the last one year, it is likely that you will not need it anymore. Discard them instead of hoarding. Pay attention to old papers, cosmetics and medicines as these tend to pile up. Your wardrobe will also have clothes that you can’t fit into any more or don’t want to wear any more.

Many times, we have duplicates of items that we may have received as gifts – if you are not using it, give it away. Your waste may be someone else’s wealth and could light up their Diwali!

Happy Cleaning & A Happy Sparking Diwali!

“Happiness is a small home, and a big kitchen”-Alfred Hitchcock

The kitchen indeed is the heart of the house, and so the way a kitchen is done up in a house is of utmost importance.

While selecting a kitchen, apart from the availability of workspace, cabinets and storage space, the golden work triangle must also be taken into consideration. The Golden Work Triangle is an imaginary triangle that is formed between the sink, refrigerator and the stove.

A modular kitchen is a modern way of setting up a kitchen so as to suit one’s needs. Based on the type of house or requirement, there are several different types of modular kitchens to choose from.

GALLEY

The most popular kitchen type is the galley kitchen. The layout is two rows of cabinets facing each other creating a narrow walk way in the middle.

This type of kitchen also encourages economical use of cabinets. Additionally, there is ample space to store appliances and adequate workspace.

Added bonus: Since there are no protruding corners, they are also less prone to injuries.

ONE WALL

One wall kitchens are best suited in small houses. In this type of modular kitchen, all the cabinets are set up against one wall. Such kitchens utilise vertical space efficiently.

Alternately, also called a kitchenet or an open kitchen, this type of kitchen provides the joy of cooking in minimal space.

L SHAPED

An L shaped modular kitchen gets its name from its design layout. It forms an L shape since the cabinets form a perpendicular on adjacent walls. L shaped kitchens provide ample room for appliances, storage and a large workspace. The L shaped kitchen gives a good proportion for the golden work triangle.

L shaped kitchens also give the feel of an open kitchen.

U SHAPED

The U shaped kitchen provides 3 walls for cabinets. This kind of modular kitchen can be opted in a comparatively larger space, as it would make the kitchen look cramped if it is in a small space. U shaped kitchen provides a huge amount of working space and room for storage. The golden triangle is an easy fit in the U shaped kitchen, providing ease and efficency in the cooking process.

ISLAND KITCHEN

The Island modular kitchen design is gaining popularity among urban households. Island kitchens are a combination of one wall, L shaped or U shades kitchen along with a freestanding kitchen top which may have drawers and cabinets for storage. High stools may also be kept for an additional seating option within the kitchen. Alternatively, it may also used for keeping appliance.

The Island modular kitchen also requires a larger space for both the design and for adequate space for movement.

PENINSULA KITCHEN

A peninsula kitchen is similar to an island kitchen. However, whereas an island kitchen is a freestanding top, a peninsula kitchen is attached to a wall on one side. This extension may have cabinets. It may also be used an extra workspace or a table top to sit at. The peninsula kitchen incorporates the golden triangle too.

The secret to finding the right kitchen is identifying ones needs and deciding kitchen type based on what suits one the best. Afterall, when the food is the art and the cook is the artist, the canvas has to be selected carefully to produce the perfect masterpiece.

FLAPTO Home Series – Work From Home (WFH)

Work From Home.

These 3 simple words have taken on a new meaning in the recent times, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. What was once considered a luxury or a “break-day” is now the new way of life for most of us.

While there were initial apprehensions about its effectiveness, Work From Home culture (or WFH as it is popularly referred to) is now seen as being productive with numerous benefits of having a virtual office, like

  • Zero travel time, hence no traffic-related stress
  • Better work-life balance, leading to employee satisfaction, better productivity & performance
  • Monetary savings for both the company (real estate, overhead etc.) and the employee (transport, professional wardrobe, team outings etc.)
  • Positive impact on the environment as pollution levels come down

Most of us usually consider our home as a space where we can relax and unwind with family and friends. However, these changing times have also necessitated establishing a dedicated workspace that lets us continue to work in the safety and security of our home, even as the pandemic rages on. Not only are we working, we are also learning from home. The key to making the Work From Home experience seamless for you and your family is to know how you can create an exclusive space with simple interior design ideas, where each of you can concentrate and work without disturbing the other.

We bring to you a series of posts with tips on how to work from home and make your experience great, starting with this one for creating a dedicated Home Office space.

  1. Identify A Dedicated Space

While it may sound like a good idea to lounge around the house and make most of the freedom by working wherever you fancy, it actually is not! Having a dedicated space ensures that you are able to take a break from work when needed and move to a different setting to clear your head. Also, you will have a designated place to keep your work-related files & notes and not have to hunt all around the house for it.

If you have a spare bedroom or a study – you have your home office space! If not, create one in any part of the house which is not in the way of other family members. This ensures privacy for you while you are working and also for others as they go about their daily routines.

  1. Create A Good & Comfortable Seating Arrangement

It may sound basic but it is very essential. Because you will be sitting for long hours, it is not a good idea to put the laptop on your lap all the time and work. You need a proper seating arrangement so that you don’t hunch and develop posture-related problems. While you may not have a proper office desk or chair lying around the house for your use, you can use any table and a straight back chair. Or if you are the kind who prefers to sit cross-legged or stretch your legs out while working (because you have the luxury do it while working from home), get a laptop table from the many options available. This will ensure that the laptop does not weigh you down constantly or harm you with the heat it emits. In this scenario, also get a good back support, like a stiff cushion or pillow.

  1. Ensure Your Work Space Is Well Lit & Ventilated

Place your desk close to an open window for good natural light and ventilation. Apart from this, ensure that you are able to focus ample artificial light on the work area for the evening times or on dark, cloudy days. You could use an overhead light or even get a desk lamp. A ceiling fan will provide you with additional air and help maintain a healthy temperature by circulating the air. Good light and ventilation ensures that you are comfortable while working and don’t strain your eyes or end up with a headache.

  1. Stay Connected!

Most of our work requires constant and continuous internet connectivity. Ensure that the space you choose receives good internet connectivity to enjoy an uninterrupted work experience. Similarly, the space you choose should also receive good mobile signals in case you need to speak to people during your work. A power socket close-by guarantees that your phone and computer get the necessary power supply when low on battery. You also won’t trip over wires running over the floor.

  1. Background Check! Ensure A Neutral Or Professional Background

Many of us have been guilty of this! Yes, we are working from home and don’t expect a sterile office environment. However, a messy background or one with inappropriate posters while on video call is not recommended. See if you can place painting, artwork or even a nice picture of the family as your backdrop. If not, just go in for a plain, clean wall. This is better than a messy background. Also, be presentable when on video calls – you don’t want to look sleepy or unkempt when talking to your colleagues or your boss.

  1. Make It Your Own!

Make the space your own and let it inspire you. Since you will be spending most of your work day here, make it a pleasant space. Add a pop of colour to your desk with a bright pen holder or picture or even a small green indoor plant. You can also create a contemporary décor around your desk so that the space visually stimulates you!

These simple, easily doable suggestions will make your work life at home more enjoyable. Do you have any other suggestions for improving the work space at home? Do leave us your suggestions – we would love to hear from you!

Simple Design Tricks For Your Home

Designing your home can be a simple process. All you need is simple but important ingredients. No, it is not designer labels, it is definitely not heavy on your pocket. It is as simple as having the right amount of creativity, and the openness to ideas. We often tend to think that only those who have been to designer schools can have good taste. True but not entirely, the biggest misconception is that every designer follows a rule book and creative book to learn from. That is not true. There is no specific rule that one follows or a do’s and don’t law against designing.

So, let’s begin with the simple tricks that can make any house feel like home.

  1. Not every furniture has to be brand new:

Sometimes, the best and attractive part of a living room, dining room or bedroom can be the combination of vintage with the latest furniture. It is that combination that makes it stand beautifully in a comfortable, cozy and stylish look.

  1. Less is More:

We have often come across this statement that less is more. It is not necessary that the room has to be filled with furniture, decorative items and portraits. No, sometimes the space in room to manoeuvre is more appealing than a full looking room. Having more space and limited decorative items and furniture can also be easy and good on your wallet.

  1. Colors of your Wall do matter:

It’s simple to know that a particular color in the showroom or on the wall of your friend’s house looked better than yours. It was not because you choose the wrong shade but simply because the lighting in that place is different from the lighting in your house. So, choose a color and shade that works with the lighting in your house. Make sure it blends as a compliment to your furniture and decorative items.
